Bohol packs geology, wildlife, and beach time into one manageable island province — the surreal, dome-shaped Chocolate Hills, the world’s smallest primate peeking out from the forest, a river cruise through the jungle, and the powdery white sand of Panglao all within an hour or two of each other.
Best Time to Visit Bohol
The dry season, roughly November to May, is the best time to visit Bohol, with the driest, sunniest stretch typically falling between February and May — also when the Chocolate Hills live up to their name, turning a rich brown color as the grass dries out. Visit during the rainy months and you’ll see the hills bright green instead, which is still a striking sight, just a different one.
Getting to Bohol
Most travelers fly into Panglao International Airport (Bohol-Panglao Airport, TAG), which has direct flights from Manila and Cebu and sits much closer to the Panglao beach resorts than the old Tagbilaran airport. From Cebu, Bohol is also reachable by fast ferry (roughly 2 hours from Cebu City to Tagbilaran), which makes a combined Cebu-Bohol trip easy to plan without needing a separate flight.
Foreign travelers eligible for the Philippines’ visa-free entry can stay for up to 30 days under Executive Order 408 (passport valid for 6+ months, plus a return/onward ticket), and should register on the eTravel platform before arrival — the same nationwide entry rule that applies anywhere else in the Philippines.
The Chocolate Hills
Bohol’s most famous landmark is a field of over a thousand near-identical, dome-shaped limestone hills spread across the towns of Carmen and neighboring areas — estimates of the exact count range from around 1,260 to over 1,700. The main viewing complex is the Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen, with a viewing deck offering a panoramic look across the hills; a quieter alternative viewpoint is Sagbayan Peak. Arriving early (the complex typically opens around 8:30 AM) means fewer crowds and softer light for photos.
Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary
The Philippine tarsier — one of the smallest primates in the world, small enough to fit in the palm of your hand — is native to Bohol, and the Tarsier Conservation Area in Bilar, managed by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation, is the most responsible place to see one in a semi-wild forest setting. Because tarsiers are extremely sensitive to noise and light, sanctuaries enforce strict rules: no flash photography, no shouting, and no touching the animals. A guided forest walk takes you past several tarsiers resting in the trees, along with a short briefing on their conservation status.
Loboc River Cruise
A relaxed floating-restaurant cruise along the Loboc River is a Bohol countryside-tour staple: guests enjoy a buffet lunch on a covered barge as it drifts past jungle scenery, stopping at a riverside spot where local performers usually put on a short cultural song-and-dance show before heading back.
Panglao Island: Beaches & Diving
Connected to mainland Bohol by bridge, Panglao Island is where most visitors base themselves — Alona Beach is the liveliest strip, lined with resorts, dive shops, and beachfront restaurants, while quieter stretches like Dumaluan and Doljo Beach are better for travelers who just want to relax. Panglao is also one of the Philippines’ top diving and freediving spots, with house reefs, wall dives, and nearby Balicasag Island known for turtles and healthy coral. Other easy add-ons include the Hinagdanan Cave (an underground cave pool you can swim in) and the man-made mahogany forest along the way to Loboc.
